Learning through Social Connection

Last week I had the pleasure of hosting an Intensive Interaction training day for some parents at a local school. During the day I found myself quoting from a short book about Intensive Interaction called ‘Learning through Social Connection: how Intensive Interaction can help your child with autism to learn more naturally‘ written by Sara Moroza-James, a mother of an autistic son.

Below I will set out just a few (of the many) interesting and insightful quotes taken directly from Sara’s book about her experiences using Intensive Interaction with her son Tom:

‘Autism is not a lifestyle choice. People who have difficulty socialising NEED to socialise just as people who have difficulty breathing NEED to breathe. It is up to the rest of us to assist them to overcome these difficulties.’

So, just as in typical early development, Intensive Interaction has no boxes to tick, no objectives as such, yet this beautiful, nurturing, free-flowing approach has since turned our lives around forever in ways that the other autism therapies we used did not.’

‘Intensive Interaction has changed Tom at a profound level, working on the very core of his autism and bringing about more typical and natural development.’

‘Tom’s Intensive Interaction journey has been, and still is, a wonderful experience for all those who have travelled and continue to travel with him. Tom is now sociable, playful and attention seeking’

His [Tom’s] interests are expanding and most importantly, he is very happy. Tom is now fun to be with and good company.’

‘In this process I have learnt that quality of life is largely dependent upon the quality of our relationships, as much for our children as for the rest of the family.’

This accessible book, written with profound honesty from a parental viewpoint, covers many issues of direct relevance to other parents of autistic children. It also contains a number of short testimonies from other parents who have used Intensive Interaction.

And it’s free … what’s not to like!
